Traveling to Austin, Texas? You have to read this post on tablefortwoblog.com on what to do, what to eat, what to see!

Over my birthday weekend at the end of January, Jason and I decided to take a trip to Austin, TX! We’ve always heard such amazing things about Austin and what a foodie city it was so we knew it was somewhere we wanted to visit, and HELLO, the best show on the planet (Friday Night Lights) was filmed there so that was another reason (as if we needed more) to go. Everyone has such great things to say about Austin: how nice everyone is, how laid back it is, how easy it is to get around, and what a great culture and vibe there is there. I’m happy to report back that all of it is very true! I just love Austin. The food there – we only touched on some of it. There’s just SO MUCH more that we couldn’t do in our 3-day trip BUT we’re definitely going back and I do want to visit San Antonio, too, next time we’re there. It’s only an hour South of Austin and there is some amazing food there too.

I had to split up my Austin trip into three parts. You get Austin, Texas: What to do, what to eat, what to see: part 1 today. Part 1 is basically what Jason and I did – meaning, taking a bunch of our friends’ recommendations and our own research, we compiled our own schedule and list of what we wanted to see, do, and eat. Part 2 is probably my favorite because we went on a Rocket Electrics foodie tour of the city – we saw & ate EVERYTHING in the eyes of a local. More on that Wednesday. And then I conclude with part 3 which is where we stayed – the perfect location downtown. It’s the spot you have to stay when you visit the great city of Austin!

So, without further ado, I will let the photos do most of the talking :)

Friday Night Lights Driving Tour

We rented a car because most of what we wanted to do would require one. Below is Coach Taylor & Tami Taylor’s house, my hall pass boyfriend aka Tim Riggins’ house, and Saracen’s house. Ahhhh it was so nostalgic and I totally wished they were actually there :P Coach Taylor and Riggins’ house were actually right down the street from each other so that was a quick drive. Saracen’s house was like an additional 10 minutes drive, but all of them are really close together. We didn’t do any of the other stuff like go to the Landing Strip (it was actually right next to the airport so we drove by it and didn’t even realize we would), East Dillon, Panther Fieldhouse, etc. If you want to do this yourself, here are the addresses:

The Texas State Capitol was literally right down the street of where we stayed. We could see the top of it from our hotel room! It was a short stroll and we were yearning for sunshine (since it had been so cold and dreary in DC) so we walked on over! It was a really nice day, too.

Salt Lick

Driftwood, TX 78619

If you don’t have a car, it’s not easy to get here so if you wanna try some of the best TX BBQ, I highly suggest renting a car and making the drive. It’s about 40 minutes southwest of Austin. It was freaking phenomenal.

I think this was the triple meat platter. It came with ribs, sausage, and brisket. So so good.

South Congress Cafe

1600 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704

If you go here for brunch (which I highly suggest), then you should allot like 90 minutes to shop around South Congress Ave. afterwards. On the weekend, they have these little popup tents with local artists selling stuff. And not to mention, South Congress Ave is just eclectic. There’s so much going on up and down the strip and there’s cute little shops to stop into. All unique and boutique. There was a really cool antique shop we stopped in, too. And, if you need energy, another Jo’s Coffee location is on this strip as well!

The migas were SO good (even if the photo doesn’t look it). I got mine with chorizo :)

Uchiko

4200 N Lamar Blvd.
Austin, TX 78756

If you love REALLY good sushi (yes, even in Texas), you need to make a reservation to Uchiko or Uchi. They’re sister restaurants. You can’t go wrong with either. Uchi is the original location and it’s a lot smaller than Uchiko. Uchi is contemporary Japanese sushi cuisine and Uchiko is more farmhouse. Honestly, it was really hard to choose which to make a reservation at but 8/10 people told us Uchiko so we made the reservation there. It was my birthday dinner and was so well worth it!!!

This was super cool. It was a sear yourself wagyu beef. You cook the beef yourself on a really hot Japanese river rock. Omg, this was amazing. Tasted like butter.

Caffé Medici

200 Congress Ave
Austin, TX 78701

We came here to grab a latte and croissants before we headed to the airport. I love cute coffee shops that have great coffee so when I looked this up on Yelp, it had great reviews so we thought we’d give it a try! It has an upstairs too where you can take your coffee up there and do some work or chat with friends.

And that was part 1! Feel free to ask any questions about the dishes we ate and where we went, etc. I didn’t talk a whole lot through this because I wanted the pictures to do the talking :)

Come back on Wednesday for part 2!! The Rocket Electrics foodie tour is something you DO NOT want to miss. If I could get on my knees to beg you to do this tour, I would. In fact, just picture me begging you now. You will never see Austin to its full extent if you don’t go on this tour. Really. The food we ate was just freaking phenomenal. You won’t be able to find it yourself, either :) anyway…see you Wednesday!!

  1. I love love your post! As a fan of Austin, I have to say that you depicted it beautifully! With so much to see and EAT you did very well. I am glad that I took the plunge and moved here because a visit just wasn’t enough for us! I now live in Cedar Park TX a community by D.R. Horton but so close to downtown Austin. I will be following for a long time I am sure! Love it!
