A travel review of Bali, Indonesia and the coastal beach town Sanur. From fun local foodie spots to where to stay in Sanur!

As you all know, I went to Bali, Indonesia last month with Amanda for a little fun in the sun! It took what, seemed like forever to get there, but it was well worth it. I had a week in Bali to relax, soak up the culture, eat amazing Balinese food, meet some great people, and get some spa treatments that were unlike any other I’ve had! It’s funny that this is considered winter in Bali. I’m used to snow and 30 degree weather! They get the winds from Australia (currently winter there right now) so it cools Bali down quite a bit. It was really nice when I was there; about 80 degrees with mild humidity. I asked a local what summer or ‘low season’ for them is and she said that you wouldn’t be outside talking to her right now because you would be drenched in sweat. Haha!

While there, we were in three different cities. They’re all popular tourist destinations and if you ever do research for a trip to Bali, they’ll probably all pop up. The first few days, we stayed in Sanur. Sanur is a coastal stretch of beach that is in southeast Bali. Historically it is known as a fishing village and you see a bunch of fishing boats out and about on the water still today. The first day that Amanda and I were both there (I arrived a day early), we had a free schedule. We walked along the beach and waterfront boardwalk and we wandered a bit into town to catch a glimpse of the local scene. When we were in Sanur, we stayed at the Fairmont Sanur Beach which was a perfect location because it’s right up against the beach and very easy access to wherever we wanted to go!

This restaurant called La Playa was a short 15 minute walk from the Fairmont. We walked along the boardwalk and had a beautiful view of the beach during our walk! There were a bunch of restaurants along the way and there were all this art and kiosks with various goods for sale. It was definitely really fun to see! It reminded me a lot of Taiwan and made me miss it so much more, but I do love that I got to experience a different part of Asia because it’s also vastly different than what I’m used to in Taiwan!

We ordered this huge sampler platter of food. We ate all of it, too! It was SO good and a great way to experience Balinese cuisine.

We then decided that since we ate so much, we should probably walk around :) so we did.

Of course we had to scope out gelato shops on our walk. We went to two different ones and were pleased with what we got! My favorite flavors the entire week were passion fruit and pink guava. I seriously could eat my weight in everything that had those flavors. Guava is my favorite fruit and I can only really get it when I’m in Asia. I would have a couple every night. They’re so expensive in the States!

Isn’t the Fairmont Sanur Beach just gorgeous? I couldn’t stop photographing everything about it. The grounds are kept so nice and I loved how much GREEN there was and how perfectly manicured it was.

Home sweet home for a few days. One of the villas we got the chance to stay at was basically our own apartment. It even had its own pool and kitchen. Oh, and a spa room. What the what?!

I loved that the pool area at the Fairmont faced the beach. If you wanted a break from the beach, you could easily stroll back to the hotel and take a dip in the pool or lay out on one of the cushioned loungers.

Orrrrrrrrr do what we did and went to Nyala Beach Club & Grill and eat the entire menu.

I mean just look at the food!! I got a mango lassi that was amazing and Amanda got a strawberry flavored drink. The Korean fried chicken burger was EVERYTHING. And the desserts were just as amazing as they look!

I think this was one of the most impressive parts of our stay. The breakfast buffet. You walk into the dining area and you just have no idea where to start. My eyes probably widened and my jaw dropped. I’ve never seen a breakfast buffet with this much to choose from and how fresh everything was. You could even ask them to make you something fresh off the griddle.

These two. So nice and funny! They wanted their photos taken and be put up online, haha – how could I say no?

Omg, I fell in love with Balinese coffee. It’s so different than American coffee. Balinese coffee has a hint of chocolate to it and it tastes SO good. There was extra coffee left in our room so I snagged some to take home for Jason so he could try their coffee.

Oh the glorious spa. You can’t pass up a treatment at the spa! My favorite part was the foot bath before your treatment started. They wash your feet and scrub it with a delicious smelling salt scrub and then give you a quick foot massage and tell you to close your eyes and breathe. Totally awesome way to begin a relaxing massage!

And if you a fancy for a nice serene stroll amongst the gardens and ponds, this is the place to do it!
