Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies are for the sweet and salty lovers!

First, if you were concerned, I got Divergent on release day in the mail. Thank you FedEx for coming through for this gal ;) it was definitely a lovely evening full of Theo James!

Second, buying a vacuum cleaner is like buying a car (sort of). So much research and so much doubt! Haha – I just want one that won’t break on me after two years. Right now the debate is between a Dyson and a Shark. It’s kind of like iOS vs. Android. Android lovers will forever devote themselves to Android and never say anything bad about it and same with iOS. I just want some REAL reviews. I want to hear the good AND the bad, ya know? I know a lot of things you buy is, “you get what you pay for” and I know our $75 vacuum that sounds like there’s a dying rat inside is clearly getting what we paid for, BUT is $400 for a Dyson really necessary? Is it excessive? Or can I live with a $150 Shark and trust it won’t crap out on me? Agh, decisions, decisions. It’s hard being an adult sometimes ;) I’ve even watched YouTube videos on these vacuums and I still can’t decide. Ugh, I just don’t want to put my money in the wrong place, that’s all.

OMG. Wait. There’s such thing as an $800 vacuum. Seriously?! I wonder if it’s *that* good to invest in one. Like will you have to buy another in a lifetime? Haha, I won’t be testing that theory out but man, $800 for a vacuum!! I don’t love my floors THAT much!

Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies are for the sweet and salty lovers!

I love salty and sweet especially in cookies! These salted chocolate chunk cookies aren’t exactly a novel idea but I honestly cannot resist chocolate chunk cookies that have sea salt flakes sprinkled on top. They look so pretty! They’re probably the cookies I’d reach for first in any situation, but then again, if I were put in a cookie situation, I’d probably, realistically take one of each, haha

    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
    • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
    • 2 large egg yolks
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup chocolate chunks
    • Maldon sea salt flakes

    • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Set aside.
    • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together butter, light brown sugar, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the egg yolks, egg, and vanilla extract and mix until incorporated. Carefully add the flour mixture to the bowl and mix until dough forms.
    • Using a spatula, fold in the chocolate chunks.
    • Using a large cookie scoop, scoop dough onto prepared cookie sheets and sprinkle sea salt flakes on top.
    • Bake 10-12 minutes (the cookies will firm up as they cool if they still look soft to you).
    • Let cool for 10 minutes on the cookie sheet then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
    • Store in an airtight container.

  • Katrina @ Warm Vanilla Sugar says:

This big fat cookie looks FAB! I can’t get enough of salt and chocolate.

  • Tieghan says:

Sometimes you just really need a cookie just like these. Big, full of chocolate and sprinkled with salt. I need these today!

  • Chelsea @ Gal on a Mission says:

We are doing some research for a vacuum too! The last one we had broke in just a YEAR – a year! Going back and forth on investing in a nice Dyson. Back to the cookies, yeah, these look super amazing! Love anything salted. :)

    • Julie says:

We ended up with a Dyson!

  • Jenny Flake says:

GORGEOUS girl! Pass me those cookies! xo

  • Naomi says:

Hey, I feel ya with the vacuum cleaner. Mines about dead, so I’m gonna wait for your final review in the one you purchase. :) As for the cookie, this classic looks awesome!

  • Kristi @ Inspiration Kitchen says:

Gah! Salt on chocolate cookies is a must if you ask me! There’s just something about the salty/sweet combo that gets me every time. About the vacuum? We have an Oreck, which is super lightweight – a must for stairs if you’re packing it up and down them. How’d I know years later we’d have all hardwood and not need a vacuum any more. :-) Good luck with your decision!

    • Julie says:

Ah, thanks Kristi! We ended up going with the Dyson!

  • Mel says:

    First, those cookies look awesome!

Second, I have both a Dyson and a Shark so I’ll give you my opinion :) I’ve had the Dyson DC25 for a couple of years and it works well. It’s easy to clean the filters and switch from carpet to hard floor. I have one rug though that it doesn’t seem to clean that well and with two dogs and a cat, I can still see little bits of fur unless I REALLY go over it.

Recently I got a Shark Navigtor for our lake house and it’s awesome. I’ve only had it a few month though so I can’t attest to its durability. I used it on the same rug I mentioned above and it sucked up ALL the fur. Might be that it’s new though. It’s really easy to use. Has a nice long cord. Switches easily from carpet to hard woods.

Having used both, I’d go with the Shark since it’s about half the cost of a Dyson.

    • Julie says:

Thanks for the genuine and honest review, Mel! We ended up going with a Dyson ’cause the one I wanted was just much lighter than the Shark but it was a hard choice especially cause of price!! I hope the Dyson lasts! Haha

  • Amanda says:

I have a Shark and it works pretty well. In my dream house I want a central vacuum system – but that is a long way off. I will just settle for eating these delicious cookies dreaming about it

    • Julie says:

I want a central vacuum system too!! Sounds so much more efficient than having an upright!

  • Michelle @ Healthy Recipe Ecstasy says:

Yeah for salt! Yeah for cookies! Yeah for cookies with salt!

  • Heather Christo says:

I can’t wait to hear about the vacuum! please let us know what you go with. These cookies are absolutely making me freak out at 7:30 in the morning. yum!

  • Ashley | Spoonful of Flavor says:

I’ll take a double batch! My Dyson is some of the best money I ever spent. I thought that I broke it more than once and the thing keeps running!

  • Kelly says:

Yes! I’ve been craving cookies lately!
Anytime I have to make a big purchase (vacuums included), I start my research at They may not discuss every single brand of vacuum out there, but they’ll give you a good cross-section of what’s out there, plus they’ll talk specifically about different features.

    • Julie says:

      Thanks Kelly!

  • CarrieN says:

I’ve had very good luck with all of the Shark items i have purchased including the Navigator. But, i only have carpet in two rooms and a couple of area rugs so i don’t do much heavy duty use on carpet. It works well for dust and pet hair on bare floors.

    • Julie says:

Thanks Carrie! My parents have Shark items too but we decided on the Dyson ’cause it was lighter for me. Hopefully it’ll be just as great as the Shark!

  • Alicia says:

I debated for months about what vacuum to buy, but finally decided to get a Dyson. I love it! I like that I can see everything it’s picking up, and there are no bags to mess with. It’s so smooth, too! My requirements were: a hose long enough to actually be functional, automatic switching from hardwood to carpet, and just for something to actually work on my wool rug. I’ve been very happy with it. AND, Bed Bath and Beyond will let you use a 20% off coupon for it.

    • Julie says:

We went with the Dyson as well! The one big draw for me was the auto switching from hardwood to carpet because I didn’t want to have to stop and switch the switch or if I forgot, I didn’t want it to not do as good of a job if I had it on hardwood and was vacuuming on carpet! It was also way lighter than the Shark so ultimately, Dyson won out for us. I hope it’s as great as everyone else says!

  • Cindy says:

    Love the cookies!
I’ve had a Shark Navigator for a year now and I loooove it.

    • Julie says:

Thanks Cindy! We ended up with the Dyson for various reasons but they were definitely contenders!! haha

  • Angelyn @ Everyday Desserts says:

    mmmmmm, now I’m craving cookies!!

  • Food, Faith, and Other Fabulous Finds says:

First, the cookies look fab! Second, here’s what I can tell you about the vacuums. A lot of the dysons have an issue with their wand extension. The wand is housed inside the flexible cord, so getting it to go back in is a pain. (My mom has one, and she hates that part of it.) I’ve had a shark for 2 years and I LOVE it. It still works just as good as when I first bought it. It’s really easy to use, easy to clean, and really gets the job done. Plus, it costs way less!! I know the Dyson ball sounds great, but I’d just get the shark with the swivel steering. Hope that helps!

    • Julie says:

Thanks so much for your input!

  • Kristi says:

What flavor of chocolate chunks did you use? Semi-sweet, dark , etc?

    • Julie says:

Hi! I used dark chocolate chunks.

  • Renee @ Tortillas and Honey says:

I love Divergent! Theo James is a great Four! I so need to try these cookies… I love the flakes of salt and I’m intrigued with the three different types of sugar that you used!

  • Blakely says:

    First, those cookies look divine.
Second, I love my Shark! I’ve only had it a couple months so I can’t comment on durability but so far I’m in love. I used a couple different Dysons at work and I was not at all impressed. I personally would not shell out the cash for one. I had a bit of a time finding the model I wanted but I finally found it on sale at the Best Buy in Tyson’s. Whatever model you get I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

    • Julie says:

Thanks Blakely! I ended up getting the Dyson ’cause of some of the features I wanted that weren’t on the Shark but it was a tough decision!!

  • Marta @ What should I eat for breakfast today says:

I think I have to change my vacuum cleaner, hahaha. Cookies look awesome.

  • Erin M. says:

I have the Dyson dc35 a d it’s awesome. The shark has a cord and that’s why I went with the Dyson. Get the Dyson. You won’t regret it!

    • Julie says:

Thanks Erin! We did end up with the Dyson!

  • Rachel @ Baked by Rachel says:

The vacuum is SO totally worth it. Such a grown up purchase lol ;) Was a fun night watching the movie for the second time since getting it ha! And many more to come… Hopefully with some of these cookies too because they look amazing!

  • ashley - baker by nature says:

Julie these cookies look so GOOD! I know my self control would be out the window with a batch of these.

  • Gaby says:

Totally my kind of cookie! I want the entire batch!

  • Stephanie @ Macaroni and Cheesecake says:

These cookies look fabulous!! And I rented divergent last night, it’s so good!

  • Desy says:

This looks deslishes! Will try it soon.

  • Karly says:

I already weighed in on the vacuum issue, but did you know that Bed, Bath, and Beyond will accept returns basically forever? Even if it’s broke. So, buy your vacuum from BB&B and if it breaks, return it and get a different brand or just replace the one that broke. ;) No buyer’s remorse that way!

    • Julie says:

Whaaaaat?! I didn’t know that! For some reason, the BBB’s around me are so snotty and I feel like they wouldn’t accept my return. I haven’t had good experiences with them. They wouldn’t let me use a 20% off coupon that was “expired” – you know those things never expire!! They finally were like “SIGH FINE, we’ll let you use it this one time.” Haha

  • Laura (Tutti Dolci) says:

I need these cookies in my life, love the salt!

  • Jeff @ says:

I like the idea of having bigger chunks of chocolate in my cookies. It adds much more flavor.

  • Jessica @ A Kitchen Addiction says:

Love a sprinkling of salt with my chocolate chip cookies! These look great!

  • Danielle says:

I heard you ended up with a Dyson. Good choice :) Can’t wait to make these cookies! Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite food — always looking to try new recipes!

  • Jessica says:

This is just what I and my 14 week old baby-to-be have been looking for!! I love sweet and salty also!! I tried Chocolate Caramel and Sea Salt cookies but for me it was too much sweet (?!? I know can there really be? haha) the Chocolate cookie with the caramel was just too much! But these Chocolate chip coolies with the salt! I will be trying these tonight! Thank you for the recipe!!

  • Susan says:

Great Blog! Look forward to trying this recipe. Vacuum cleaners – do NOT buy a Dyson. We bought one with the intention of replacing our old Sears Kenmore canister vac. Dyson has a nice design and their marketing is fabulous but after several months of using the Dyson, I find the Kenmore does a much better job and is still kicking around. I truly regret buying the Dyson. Not worth the $$$. The Shark looks great and has a good price point.

  • Matea says:

I think I have an unhealthy obsession with chocolate chip cookies; I could eat them every day: right out of the oven, with a glass of milk, on my way out of the house, or anywhere!

  • Lisa says:

OK so I realize my comment is several years late….. Anyway, I LOVE, LOVE chocolate chip cookies and OMG! to add salt.. Thank you, Thank you for that wonderful idea. Will be making them with salt from now on. As for the vacuum…. Hope you like your Dyson. As for me… Had a Kirby – waaaaay too heavy. Have a Dyson DC25 – not as good as I had hoped. There is a close off valve (of some sort) when you pull up the hose to switch to hand held and sometimes when that valve doesn’t switch the suction isn’t as good. The hand held part is so awkward to use. Also, somehow my hose has a huge gash near the handle (not sure how or when it happened, I do take care of my things). Not as maneuverable (if that’s a word) as I thought. Just not worth the money (in my opinion). Now as for the type of vacuum I think is by far the best…. !!! iRobot Roomba !!! All you have to do is push a button. I know, I know… It’s the lazy way out, but, hey, if you are a busy person then I believe this gadget is a god send. Sorry for the long winded comment. Me, myself… I love reading everyone’s comment as long as they aren’t rude. ? Keep up the wonderful blogs Julie!!! You do a fabulous job!!!! Thanks again!

    • Julie says:

Aw thank you so much! We still use our Dyson and it’s still trucking along!! And actually, we just got a robot vacuum too! It’s nice for touchups on the main floor because we have a corgi and he is a shedder year-round :)
