Green Monster Smoothie

Okay so I gave in. And I’m kind of hooked on this green smoothie sensation. When the whole green thing started, you know, like doing shots of wheatgrass..and then adding green leaves to your smoothies. I was so opposed to it. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to try it, it was because I was scared I’d taste the spinach or taste something completely disgusting.

Well, after seeing thousands of bloggers (this number is slightly exaggerated) post their own versions of green smoothies and how none of them croaked upon drinking it, I decided to give it a try. Uh, yeah, I’m hooked. I’ve been having one every day for breakfast.

If you’re scared like me of tasting the leafy greens, I realized this: all the fruit and stuff you put in this drink, the ratio of spinach to fruit/nuts/oats, is like 10/90, therefore, the fruity-ness completely takes over the entire taste. It tastes like a REGULAR smoothie. This is so deceiving and I love it. If I had a kid, I’d force him/her to drink it cause it’s good nutrition. I don’t care if the green scares them, I’d be like “it’s sweet and it’s green because Big Bird says G is for Green which means good for you,” surely that’ll work, right?

You can literally throw anything in this smoothie. I’m going to start throwing flax seeds & oats in them so the protein and fiber will keep me fuller for longer. I know some people use peanut butter and other nut butters, which you can do too, but I haven’t tried that yet.

Be green. Drink a green monster and be invincible! Ok, those aren’t accurate claims, but you’ll feel better about yourself :)

Yield: 2 smoothies | Prep Time: 2 minutes

Ingredients:

2 cups frozen fruit (I used mixed fruit that included pineapples, grapes, strawberries, mangos, and peaches)

1 banana, broken into pieces

1 1/2 cup almond milk

Large handful of spinach

Instructions:

  1. Throw everything in the blender and blend until a smooth consistency. If it gets stuck, turn it off, and use a spatula to break it up and start it again.

Julie’s Notes: Like I mentioned, you may add oats or flax seeds to this for more protein and fiber. You can also add any type of nut or nut butter or use Greek yogurt.

You’re gonna make me do it aren’t you? It’s time for an intervention. Someone get the bacon!! ;) I’m totally scared of the green smoothie trend.

Kathryn - May 14, 2012 - 9:24 AM

I am quite scared of all these green smoothies although I’ve started having a cup of hot water & lemon first thing in the morning so I feel my conversion to smoothies isn’t far away… Thank you for the reassurance though that it doesn’t taste too green!

brandi - May 14, 2012 - 9:38 AM

they’re so good, right? i was scared at first too, but they’re so good.

i’m having one for breakfast with almond milk, strawberries, cocoa, and spinach.

Gina @ Running to the Kitchen - May 14, 2012 - 9:57 AM

Did you get a blender?! Now you need to make those margaritas, girl!

Sophie - May 14, 2012 - 10:06 AM

Do you think you can use a food processor instead of a blender to make this?

Ali @ Gimme Some Oven - May 14, 2012 - 10:31 AM

Lovvvvvve green smoothies! And love your cute green polka dots in the background! :)

amy @ fearless homemaker - May 14, 2012 - 10:38 AM

Carrie @ Kiss My Whisk - May 14, 2012 - 11:08 AM

Cassie - May 14, 2012 - 11:23 AM

Definitely not scared to try, in fact, I want to try these so badly but I don’t have a blender! Agh! I hope I win the KA one!! :)

Tracey - May 14, 2012 - 11:34 AM

I was totally scared of these at first too, but like you said, you really can’t taste the spinach at all! Mine is never as pretty as yours though since I add cocoa powder – it’s usually an ugly brown color :)

Georgia @ The Comfort of Cooking - May 14, 2012 - 12:44 PM

What a funny name for a tasty looking smoothie!

Stephanie - May 14, 2012 - 1:06 PM

I tried a green smoothie not too long ago and it was pretty tasty! Thanks for your recipe!

sally @ sallys baking addiction - May 14, 2012 - 1:20 PM

Julie- i LOVE green monsters. :) I usually freeze my banana chunks, which makes the smoothie SO thick – almost like a milkshake. My go-to is frozen bananas, frozen mangos, frozen strawberries, spinach, vanilla greek yogurt, and almond milk. I might have to try grapes sometime!

Jackie @ Domestic Fits - May 14, 2012 - 2:36 PM

This looks delicious :) I haven’t made one, but I think I may jump on the healthy green bandwagon soon!

Lynna - May 14, 2012 - 3:19 PM

i guess i have to try this! i was the same with you on trying the green smoothie, but since another blogger has claimed how delicious this drink is…i gotta have one!

Katrina @ In Katrina's Kitchen - May 14, 2012 - 3:24 PM

I keep forgetting to try this lol! One of these days ;)

Sharon - May 14, 2012 - 4:31 PM

Some mornings I don’t want a sweet smoothie – so I mix spinach, V8 juice, buttermilk and Tabasco – it’s really quite yummy!

Erin - May 14, 2012 - 5:13 PM

I am so in love with green monster smoothies!

amanda @ fake ginger - May 14, 2012 - 6:23 PM

Shawn @ I Wash...You Dry - May 15, 2012 - 12:39 AM

I totally love the green juice! (I juice my fruits and veggies instead of doing smoothies…just as good!) But this smoothie sounds totally good with the almond milk! Yum!

Chung-Ah | Damn Delicious - May 15, 2012 - 1:30 AM

You know I trust you 110% so I will definitely try this out, despite my fear of green smoothies!

Mackenzie @SusieFreakingHomemaker - May 15, 2012 - 9:18 AM

I absolutely love this!! I always add spinach, but I never use almond milk – I’m going to try your version!!

Lauren @ Sweet Splendor - May 15, 2012 - 10:49 AM

I love this post! Smoothies are one of my favorite things to make

Mercedes - May 15, 2012 - 3:47 PM

I love green smoothies! They make me feel so good about myself! And you’re right the fruit overtakes the spinach and so the flavor is just like any fruity smoothie!

Erin @ Dinners, Dishes, and Desserts - May 15, 2012 - 3:53 PM

Look at you going to town with smoothies, now that you have a blender! I am still nervous, but I will have to give it a try sometime!

Aimee @ ShugarySweets - May 15, 2012 - 8:59 PM

I’m so not very “granola” however, I love a cold green smoothie. With a side of chocolate chip cookies.

Stephanie @ Macaroni and Cheesecake - May 18, 2012 - 12:53 AM

So glad you finally tried them! I was skeptical at first too, but they are actually good!:)

Kiran @ KiranTarun.com - May 18, 2012 - 7:15 AM

Mmm.. love a good green monster smoothie :)

Brittany - May 19, 2012 - 3:00 PM

Love green smoothies!! Next up, try kale instead of the spinach.

Chineka - May 19, 2012 - 11:01 PM

Never tried these smoothies before, but I want to try one with a lot of apples and pears so that it will taste like apple juice..lol. Great post and thanks for sharing.

Alanna - January 3, 2013 - 1:10 PM

Oh man, these look amazing, refreshing, healthy. Definitely gonna try ‘em! Thanks for the inspiration. Found you on NoshOnIt, and am looking forward to reading more. :)

Stephanie - January 4, 2013 - 3:40 PM

I started making smoothies this year (ha, only for the past few days!) too. Totally can’t tell there is spinach or lettuce in my drink!

Oh, I make the little one try it because it’s green like The Incredible Hulk. =)

Courtney Wells - February 19, 2013 - 9:59 AM

I too, have jumped aboard the Green Machine Express! I tried one this morning and fed it to my 5 kiddos. They were very scared and I threatened to take away Smoothie King….and that was a wrap! All love it and that made me so happy. Oh, I love it too. The real test, sad as it may seem will be my hubby.

Susan - February 21, 2013 - 8:29 PM

Can you use frozen spinach instead of fresh ??

Julie - February 21, 2013 - 9:48 PM

I guess if you’re in a bind, you could, but I personally wouldn’t because there’d be a lot more liquid content unless you thawed it out & squeezed out the water.
