The perfect summer side for those outdoor picnics, cookouts, and more!
I hardly ever seen fried green tomatoes on a menu anymore. Are they not as popular or something? Maybe it’s something more popular in the south?
Either way, at least I have this recipe for fried green tomatoes in my arsenal so whenever I stumble upon green tomatoes, I’ll know what to make with them!

The outer crust is so crispy and the inside is soft and cooked to perfection. I love me a good fried green tomato :)

This whole stack needs to be in your mouth, except you might burn yourself so maybe let’s just do half a stack.

I’m totally going to go eat my weight in fried green tomatoes now.

- 1 cup (108 g) Italian breadcrumbs
- ½ cup (80 g) cornmeal
- 2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 cup (236 ml) buttermilk
- 2 eggs, beaten

- In another shallow dish, mix together buttermilk and eggs.1 cup (236 ml) buttermilk, 2 eggs
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Dip a green tomato slice in the egg wash mixture then cover with breadcrumb mixture, lightly pressing it onto the tomato. Shake off excess and gently place on prepared baking sheet. Continue until all slices have been coated.3 large green tomatoes
- In a deep pot, bring vegetable oil to 350 °F (177 °C) using a thermometer.4 cups (946 ml) vegetable oil
- Fry two to three tomatoes at a time, you don’t want to crowd the pot too much. Fry each side 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown, then flip over and fry the other side.
- Place on a plate lined with paper towels to let excess oil drip off. Repeat until all tomatoes have been fried.
- Serve hot with your favorite sauce. We created a mayo and ketchup based sauce.

OH GOD I LOVE. My favorite food right here.
I love everything about this post, and not just the fried green tomatoes!! yummmm!!!
Seriously, don’t even get me started on traffic/driving.commuting in this town. you just said everything I feel ALL THE TIME.
I totally get what you’re saying Julie! People who drive in la suck just as much. And when it rains, it’s like the world is coming to an end because everyone drives so freaking slow. Unbearably slow. As for the green tomatoes, yes please! Jason’s been wanting to try green tomatoes but I just never got around to it. Definitely bookmarking this so I can make it when he returns home!
hahaha I LOVE your rant about DC traffic. I couldn’t agree with you more. My personal favorite – on sections of 395 the lovely people who ride in the shoulder to get around traffic. Because I just love sitting here and wouldn’t like to get home faster too. Jerks : )
I made these a couple weeks ago, and I love them! I only drive through DC at 6 am or 9 pm, and I sometimes STILL hit traffic! Or sometimes I go during rush hours just so I have an excuse to stop at IKEA and Wegmans!
I love fried green tomatoes + these look delicious! Now you’ve got me craving ’em first thing in the morning!
Every time I a recipe like this I remember the film, which I really liked..
Never have tried them though. I should!
Number 1 and 3 of your points drive me crazy!
Driving in and around DC certainly takes patience. Ever since moving to Bethesda I’ve learned that this is apparently where half of the agressive drivers live. Sigh.
But seriously, I was obsessed with fried green tomatoes all summer. This was my first year growing them and half of them never made it to red!
I’ve been to DC twice, and both times, I knew that I didn’t know how to drive in such a big city, so I took taxis. I didn’t want to even try!
PS Fried green tomatoes + black pepper goat cheese is my deathbed meal!
I had to navigate Dupont Circle and Georgetown on Monday. I feel your traffic pain! Definitely makes me want to eat my weight in tasty foods, like these tomatoes. They look so crispy and juicy and tasty.
