The perfect summer side for those outdoor picnics, cookouts, and more!

I hardly ever seen fried green tomatoes on a menu anymore. Are they not as popular or something? Maybe it’s something more popular in the south?

Either way, at least I have this recipe for fried green tomatoes in my arsenal so whenever I stumble upon green tomatoes, I’ll know what to make with them!

The outer crust is so crispy and the inside is soft and cooked to perfection. I love me a good fried green tomato :)

This whole stack needs to be in your mouth, except you might burn yourself so maybe let’s just do half a stack.

I’m totally going to go eat my weight in fried green tomatoes now.

Instructions

  • In a shallow dish, mix together both kinds of breadcrumbs, cornmeal, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • In another shallow dish, mix together buttermilk and eggs.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Dip a green tomato slice in the egg wash mixture then cover with breadcrumb mixture, lightly pressing it onto the tomato. Shake off excess and gently place on prepared baking sheet. Continue until all slices have been coated.
  • In a deep pot, bring vegetable oil to 350 °F (177 °C) using a thermometer.
  • Fry two to three tomatoes at a time, you don’t want to crowd the pot too much. Fry each side 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown, then flip over and fry the other side.
  • Place on a plate lined with paper towels to let excess oil drip off. Repeat until all tomatoes have been fried.
  • Serve hot with your favorite sauce. We created a mayo and ketchup based sauce.

  1. I actually bought green tomatoes at the farmer’s market yesterday because I’ve been seeing so many recipes for frying them! Super excited to try them!

I toootally agree with you on all the traffic things. Except that I don’t think it’s too ridiculous to allow hybrid vehicles in the HOV Lane (we call it the “Carpool Lane”). The point of the it is to encourage people to save gas by carpooling…Using a hybrid car also saves gas, so why not reward them too? Anyway since California is full of hippies and everyone drives hybrids here, It became so crowded they changed it to a certain MPG that gets approved to ride in the carpool lane, not just all hybrids. I think that’s fair :)

  2. Oh DC how I miss you, lol! My hubby and I were just talking about the traffic there a few days ago! I guess it hasn’t changed since we moved! When we would would drive on the beltway I would literally have to put my head in my lap, I couldn’t watch, especially during rush hour; forget it! I could go on and on but now we live in the country and there is no traffic just lots of tomatoes in my garden that need to be used for this delicious recipe! ;)

  3. I ADORE fried green tomatoes. I look forward to them every year! And don’t even get me started on drivers. But it sounds like we have the same kind of drivers here in Utah!

  4. Denver has HOV lanes, but they are purely HOV. And with how environmentally conscious Colorado is, I am surprised they don’t have the Hybrid rule – thank god they don’t!!

I just had fried green tomatoes for the first time last week, so good!

  5. I don’t know whyyy I’ve never had fried green tomatoes before but I definitely need to try them. Holy crunch. These look rockin’, Julie!

  6. This is a way of eating tomatoes I could get behind :) I agree, cook what you love and portion control will take care of the rest!

  7. I have two things to say: 1) traffic is the biggest stressor in my life. I can’t even start to go into everything that irritates me about it. 2) I love fried things as an alternate to sweets but (confession) I’ve never had fried green tomatoes! This needs to change ASAP!
