kitchen goals

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope y’all had great celebrations with friends and family. I can’t believe 2012 is already here! I want to say thank you to my readers. I only started this blog less than a year ago but I’ve already met so many wonderful friends and I cannot believe how far I’ve come. I hope I can continue to share and inspire you this year and continue to make great friendships through my kitchen :)

Every year, we all make “resolutions” of accomplishments we hope to achieve before the end of the year.

This year, instead of having resolutions, I want to have kitchen goals. There are a lot of kitchen techniques, dishes, and desserts that I have yet to try and as a challenge to myself, I want to make a list of these goals and see which ones I can do by the end of the year. Being in the kitchen is all about learning and trial and error and I’m all for that!

Kitchen goals of mine:

  • Frost cupcakes with pastry tips
  • Make macarons
  • Make candy or caramel, something where you boil sugar to a temperature
  • Make a cake including frosting it
  • Make a pie
  • Make cheesecake
  • Make bread
  • Use quinoa
  • Learn how to use yeast
  • Make more Asian dishes from childhood
  • Make ice cream
  • Make fresh pasta
  • Make biscuits
  • Make scones
  • Make a trifle
  • Make souffle or popovers
  • Go to at least 2 or 3 food blog conferences (ok, maybe this isn’t a kitchen goal but it’ll help me in the kitchen!)
  • Meet at least 5 of my blogger friends and followers
  • Improve my photography in and outside the kitchen
  • Take a new picture of myself, preferably in the kitchen, for a new avatar

As you can see, there’s a lot I have to learn and do. I’m so excited I have a full year to do all this and I’m sure my list will continue to grow. I’ll probably keep updating this list so this time next year, I can come back and see what I can cross off my list :)

Am I missing anything? Any suggestions? I love challenges! Do you have any kitchen goals for 2012? Please share!

I love the idea of setting kitchen goals – there are lots of things that I would like to try but I just need to get over the fear and the belief that I won’t actually be able to! I think 2012 has got to be the year that I start baking more bread and playing with yeast and not just stick to cake and cookies.

So many of these are on my unofficial list too. Especially frosting cupcakes with a pastry tip! As someone who was terrified of scones last year but made them twice…start with those, they are SO easy and you’ll feel accomplished :)
I hope to be able to attend some conferences and meet some wonderful bloggers too this year! Including you!

I love the idea of goals, not resolutions, for the New Year! I also want to improve my photography and I want to get back to posting regularly again; biscuits were a goal of mine a few months ago so I decided to make a batch every week, which took the fear of sticky dough out of the project. (And I highly recommend Nathalie Dupree’s “Southern Biscuits” for the task : ) Looking forward to reading more from you in 2012!

Great list. We can accomplish some of these together!

those are great goals! I too would love to make ice cream (need an ice cream maker first though!) & have always wanted to make both savory & sweet scones.

As for meeting food bloggers, come to Nashville!! There are gobs of us & we have a really neat community. Would love to show you around :)

I love the food blog community y’all have in Nashville. I’m so jealous, so much so that I’ve tried to convince my bf that we should move down there :) I went to the nashville food bloggers site yesterday and you guys do such awesome events. I’m hoping to make it down to Nashville sometime this year or next so will definitely let you know :)
