Skip the fillers of store-bought taco seasoning and make your own at home! It’s inexpensive, fresher, and you can make a ton and use it multiple times!
Once you make taco seasoning at home, you won’t want to buy store-bought again. To have taco seasoning on hand at home at all times, you can use it to make One Pot Taco Spaghetti, Slow Cooker Chili, Taco Casserole, and so much more!
Have you ever flipped over the taco seasoning package at the store? Let me save you the time and just tell you that it has a lot of fillers and if you are one with any sort of dietary sensitivities, it’s something you really have to be careful about!
The good news is that making taco seasoning at home is easy and a lot fresher than store-bought. There are no fillers and it’s all spices you likely already have in your spice cabinet. I tend to make a double batch so I can always have it on hand and this lasts up to a year when stored properly in a cool, dry place, so it’s a no-brainer to whip up this seasoning mix!
What’s in Taco Seasoning?
There’s a blend of chili powder, ground cumin, smoked paprika, kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano.

How to Use It and How Much to Use
You can use homemade taco seasoning in recipes where it calls for taco seasoning, like shrimp skewers and a taco ring. It’s the same ratio — so say the recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of taco seasoning, just use 1 teaspoon of your homemade one!
Storage Instructions
Taco seasoning will be good for 1 year. It doesn’t ever go “bad,” but spices do lose their flavor intensity if being stored for an extended period of time. Make sure to store this seasoning blend in a cool, dry place.
