3-ingredient bbq pulled pork

bbq pulled pork

Besides my love for chocolate and peanut butter, I have another love that’s not on the sweet-side: BBQ. I even worked at a BBQ restaurant when I was in high school! I’ve always loved the sweet and tangy taste of BBQ and the burnt wood smell from the smoking. It always makes my mouth water and I’m obsessed with BBQ sauce. Jason says I use BBQ sauce like people use ketchup. It’s true — I use BBQ sauce on mostly everything and anything you can dip (well, obviously not like a banana or strawberries lol). Chicken tenders for me are always coated in honey mustard and BBQ sauce, my fries are always dipped in BBQ sauce, my steaks are never in A1, I dip them in BBQ. Yeah, it’s kind of an obsession and by some people’s standards, they think it’s gross. I always have a bottle of BBQ sauce on hand too. I might as well start jarring my own, right?

When I saw this recipe, I was so excited to try it. 3 ingredients and you basically let it cook itself. There’s hardly any work involved! Not to mention, it turned out FREAKING AWESOME. It was the most tender, moist, and flavorful BBQ shredded pork I’ve ever had. I seriously was contemplating opening up a BBQ joint after this (kidding). It helps too if you have awesome BBQ sauce. You must try making this yourself. It will become a regular on your menu and it’s seriously the easiest and most hands-free recipe out there. You basically let the slow-cooker do all the work! I let mine cook overnight while I was sleeping and I woke up to the most marvelous smell! Although, at 5:30am, it wasn’t exactly what I really wanted to smell, but nonetheless, it smelled great!

Ingredients:

2 lbs. pork tenderloin

12 oz. (1 can) of root beer

18 oz. (1 bottle) of your favorite BBQ sauce

4 hamburger buns, if you’re making it a sandwich

Instructions:

  1. Put the pork in the slow cooker.
  2. Pour the root beer over the pork.
  3. Turn your slow cooker on low and let it cook for 6-7 hours.
  4. After 6-7 hours, take out your pork and set it on a cutting board.
  5. Dump out the root beer from the slow cooker.
  6. Shred your pork. It’ll probably fall apart easily. You can do this with a fork. I did mine with the tongs I used to get the pork out.
  7. Put the shredded pork back in the slow cooker and pour all the BBQ sauce on top. Mix it around to coat every piece of pork.
  8. Let this cook for about another 45 minutes to an hour.
  9. Serve with warm hamburger buns and don’t be shy with the filling!

Note: I cooked mine overnight, shredded the pork in the morning before work and put it in a tupperware container in the fridge. When I got home, I placed the pork back in the slow cooker and did steps 7-10. You obviously can do this however you want. I don’t know your schedule! Just wanted to point out that you don’t have to do this altogether. You basically add the BBQ sauce and cook prior to serving.

What kind of root beer and BBQ sauce did you use? How many did this serve?

Julie - February 27, 2012 - 5:13 PM

This can serve 4-6 people, depending on how much you want in between the buns. I used A&W root beer and Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce.

Have you ever done this with chicken? Do you think I could use bonless chicken breasts or small roaster chicken?

Julie - February 29, 2012 - 7:46 AM

I’ve never done this with chicken but I’d imagine it’d be the same. I’d use boneless chicken breasts.

My husband loves this! Great recipe.

I found this recipe on pintrest and had honestly never tried pulled pork before. It looked so easy and the hubby loves it so I had to try it. With a few adjustments for a larger pork loin (2 cans of soda, and alternating the crock-pot to high every now and then) it turned out fantastic :) Thank You :)

Here’s a suggestion that will give your recipe a little more depth of flavor. Rather than putting the pulled pork and BBQ sauce back in the crock pot, spread it on a rimmed baking sheet lined with heavy aluminum foil, then put it in the oven under the broiler. Let the direct heat work its caramelizing magic on your sweet and tender pork and BBQ sauce. You will need to stay close and stir it around from time to time because it can can go from crispy and caramelized to burnt and useless in the blink of an eye.

Julie- I am making this tomorrow, if I cook the pork in high then it will be done in 4 hrs? And what side dish will you recommend if I put it on a bun?, thanks so much for this lovely recipe.

Julie - October 22, 2012 - 9:01 PM

I think 4 hours would be good on high. Do you like coleslaw? I know a lot of people like coleslaw with their pulled pork. Or you could have potato salad as a side dish.

Hey, Julie! This sounds great- any clue how many servings this would make? I’m usually serving a “table for two” as well, but would like to make this dish for a party of ten I’m having next week. Thanks! – Bridget

This makes about 4 servings.

Do you pour out the juice before putting the pork back in after shredding?

Julie - December 13, 2012 - 4:05 PM

Yeah, in step 5 it says dump out the root beer from the slow cooker.

This was so good! Just had it for dinner, can’t believe three ingredients could make such a good dish!

I just made this today and boy was it good!! :) Mine were in the slow cooker for a little over 10 hours on low and used Diet A&W root beer & Archer Farm’s Midwestern Style BBQ sauce (from Target) and it was excellent!! I served it on Hawaiian rolls with spicy sweet potato fries… Will definitely be making again!! Thank you!!

Well Happy Birthday Julie! But I totally know what you mean: if it’s not written in big blazing letters in my planner, I often forget holidays too. However, I DO have big blazing letters to remind me about the Super Bowl and this slow cooker pulled pork looks perfect!! :D

Just found your blog and already LOVE it! I made the pulled pork yesterday and it was wonderful and so easy. Everyone loved it. Can’t wait to try more of your recipes!

sarah - March 10, 2013 - 5:06 PM

Do you think two hours on low an three on high would work?

Julie - March 10, 2013 - 5:24 PM

No, I don’t think so. Your pork would not be shreddable yet.
