Bang bang!
This chicken dish lives up to its name. It’s BANGIN’ good. Like, out of this universe amazing. It’s an appetizer that I guarantee you’ll hear cries for more. I hear this is a copycat recipe to Bonefish’s Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer. I’ve never eaten there before so I don’t know how similar this is to the real thing, but who cares? It’s freaking delicious and probably healthier for you too since it’s not deep fried.
Story behind this recipe: I was on Pinterest (who isn’t?) and was surfing the food section and I came across this beautiful picture of shrimp in a bowl. Literally, could’ve eaten those little shrimps (shrimp?) from the screen. Curious, I clicked on it, and it took me to a blog called, Fake Ginger. Little did I know, this blog lead me to Amanda, who is the author of Fake Ginger (Hi Amanda!!). Amanda is a sweet mother to three boys and she has some kick-ass food on her website, one of which being the Bang Bang Shrimp. I commented on her post saying that I’m dying to make this but I’d rather try it with chicken instead, she told me to let her know how it was. This was back in October. I just now got around to making it and I’m totally kicking myself for that because had I stuck to the original plan of making it in October, I probably would’ve made this dish 5 more times already. I’m so glad I stumbled upon Amanda and her creation on Pinterest. We share the same love in the kitchen and as well as watching trashy TV shows on Bravo and having endless Twitter chats about them :)
I love the breading on the chicken and the super spicy sauce that’s coated into every nook and cranny on this chicken. It’s seriously the best appetizer to have for when you have friends over for a football game, or you can be like Jason and I and ate it as a main entree with a side of white rice. This is a little tedious in how you make it, since the breading takes a while, but honestly, you won’t regret it. The second you put a piece of this chicken in your mouth, you’ll instantly thank yourself for sticking through the process :)
*You can do this with shrimp or chicken.
Bang Bang Chicken
Yield: A few people for appetizers, otherwise 2 as an entree
Ingredients:
5 chicken tenderloins, cubed
For the sauce:
1/2 cup mayo
5 tsp. Sriracha sauce
1 tsp. granulated sugar
1 tsp. rice vinegar
For the egg mixture:
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
For the breading:
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup Panko breadcrumbs
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp ground pepper
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. dried basil
Instructions:
- Prepare a plate lined with paper towels for the chicken after it’s done cooking in the oil. Set aside.
- Combine all the ingredients for the sauce and set aside.
- In a small, shallow dish, combine the egg and milk. Set aside.
- In another shallow dish, combine the ingredients for the breading. Set aside.
- Bread the chicken cubes by first coating it in the bread mixture then the egg wash then back in the breading. Put the coated chicken cubes on a plate. Continue until all the chicken have been breaded.
- Pop the plate of chicken in the fridge for about 20 minutes. It’ll help the breading stick to the chicken.
- In a large skillet, add a thin layer of vegetable oil and place over medium high heat.
- Once the oil is glistening, add in the chicken (I did it in 2 batches so you don’t overcrowd the pan) and cook the chicken until it’s cooked through & the breading is nice and crispy brown.
- Once the first batch is done, put the cooked chicken on the prepared plate with the paper towel. Continue with the second batch and once that’s cooked, add that to the prepared plate.
- In a large bowl, put in your cooked chicken and pour the sauce all over. Toss well to coat every bite.

Wowzers, this sounds amazing! I love the spicy sauce and bet it works so well with the crispy chicken. This will definitely be on my dinner table soon! Love it!
This sounds awesome. Great move with the chicken too!
Wow this looks great! Need to try this one.
Happy 2012

You had me at Sriracha…this looks soooo good!
This looks incredible! Seriously amazing. I think I am going to make this later this week. …… or…….. maybe even tonight!
Okay – if it’s as tasty as it is fun to say – I’m so IN!! And that sauce? Ben would be tripping all over himself for…
On the menu it goes! ~Megan
I am going to have to try this. I had already planned on adapting the bang bang shrimp to chicken too because there is a sushi restaurant back home that has ‘kicken chicken’ that is A M A Z I N G! And wondered if this may be like it. I can’t wait to try! YUM!
Uhhhh, omg. I love this!
I need this in my life like now! It’s like PF Changs in your kitchen, but I’m sure even better!
Love it. My favorite cuisine too. I’ll be trying this soon. Sounds awesome!
Do it!!
I’m POSITIVE it’s even better — only because I’m not a fan of PF Chang’s haha but I’m biased lol
love the title of this one and the pics just pop off the page!
I’ve seen this recipe twice now, so that means I have to make it! :)
Must. try. this. immediately! I’m sure the shrimp version would be awesome as well!
Totally loving the name of this chicken. Bang bang!
Okay, now I’ve GOT to try it with chicken! This looks waaaay too good. And thank you for all the sweet words!
Oh. Wow. Good thing I’m not a vegetarian because I have to make this. LOVE.
Bang Bang chicken looks amazing. I have all the ingredients in my pantry, so guess what , I shall make this tomorrow for dinner.
This chicken looks awesome! I need to try it
Looks so delicious!!! There’s a 100% chance that I’ll be making this tonight.
This tastes exactly like Bang Bang shrimp/chicken from Bonefish. It is AMAZING. We also served as tacos – Thank you!!!!!

I am eating these right now and I just had to tell you how amazing they are. When I read that they tasted like Bonefish’s I just had to try. I used gluten free breadcrumbs.
This is absolutely delicious. I made it as an appetizer for an engagement party and every bite was eaten. I even breaded it and put it in the refrigerator about 3 hours before I actually cooked it. I did have trouble finding the srirachi sauce, but I was looking in the Hispanic food section and it is actually in the Asian section. This is even good when it gets cold. The chicken doesn’t get soggy. A must do.

Hey! This looks amazing! :) Just wondering: for the rice vinegar, does it matter what type it is? (Black, white, etc.?) Thanks!
My fiance and I make this often. We both find the mayo too heavy, so we sub half olive oil half chicken broth for it. Turns out amazing still and is probably better for you.
I used white rice vinegar.

We have a local restaurant that serves this and were thrilled to find the recipe here. We gave it a try and it is BETTER than the local restaurant version. Also, we love the sauce so much that we use it on sandwiches, burgers, etc. Thank you for posting it! =)
Whoah. This is amazing, and is now in the regular dinner rotation. AND, I should note, I make this with cubed, breaded, and fried tofu. Super delectable. In fact, I always make a double batch :)
I just realized, I’ve been using 3 times as much Sriracha as the recipe calls for (I use 5T per batch, rather 5t)–perhaps that’s why I love it so much!
Made this and my husband and myself LOVED it!! One question, I am currently on Weight Watchers, would you happen to know the fat, cal, etc. so I can figure out the points value? Making this again for dinner tonight!!
Sorry, I don’t know that kind of stuff :( I don’t even know where to begin to start counting stuff like that. Sorry I’m no help!
I found this on Pinterest & tried it tonight. It was super good. The family ate it all up. We kept the sauce on the side because my little one doesn’t care for spicy things, but the benefit of that is that we now have sauce left over to keep for later.
Thanks for the recipe!
So glad you enjoyed it! :)
I love spicy foods, but the rest of my family does not. Would this still be good if you cut the heat down or is the heat what really makes this dish what it is? I wasn’t sure if the sauce would wind up tasting too much like mayo if you cut out more of the srirachi sauce?
Hi Keri – the sauce would taste more like mayo than the spicy-tang that sriracha gives. You could tone it down a little – why don’t you try it with a few tsp. instead of 5? Try 2 tsp and see if that’d be too spicy and if it tastes too mayo-y. :)
So excited I found this!!!! My hubby and I are HUGE fans of Bang bang shrimp from Bonefish….However we moved from FL to CA, and no Bonefish or Bang bang shrimp anywhere! I came up with a very similar recipie to try and duplicate it, but I used a garlic chili hot sauce instead of the sriracha. Still great, no complaints from my dad or hubby, but not the same to me. I am a huge fan of chicken and trying to be a little healthier, so I am so stoked to try this baked chicken version…Thanks for spicing up my chicken/kitchen!!
I must be the only one who doesn’t know what sriracha sauce is?? Clue please? lol
It’s a chili sauce. It’s got the distinctive green top & rooster on it. Here’s a pic: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sriracha_%22Rooster_Sauce%22.jpg
This was delish!!!!!!!!!
Made this veg-friendly using cubed homemade seitan “chicken” cutlets and vegenaise. SO AWESOME!
Frying isn’t my favorite thing on the planet but I usually make an exception a couple times a year (fried green tomatoes in the summer are the best) and this recipe will definitely be repeated.
Thank you for the tasty noms! :)
I made this last weekend with both chicken and shrimp. There wasn’t a piece left. I added 4T of sriracha v. the 5t. Brought better heat! :-) Thank you for sharing!
Just made this for Super Bowl….. AMAZING THANKS
My wife and I hosted a Super Bowl Party yesterday and Bang Bang Chicken was one of the things I made. Needless to say, it got rave reviews! I will definitely be making it again!
No, seriously – this chicken was freaking a-mazing! I actually made it for dinner and served it over rice…and then my husband requested I make it again, two nights later! Yep, that good.
I’ve posted this all over Pinterest and sent it to everyone I know.
Love. Definite must make meal.
