If it’s not broke, don’t break it, right? Cookies and cream milkshakes have been around since 1979 when students and a dairy plant manager at South Dakota State University decided to blend some Oreos with ice cream. The rest, as they say, is history! While there are plenty of way you can dress up this classic milkshake, I like it just the way it should be.

And the way it should be is creamy, decadent, and loaded with Oreos! You only need vanilla ice cream, milk, Oreos, and a splash of vanilla extract to make this tried and true American classic. While you can go to any diner, drive-thru, or shake spot to grab a Cookies and Cream Milkshake, I like making them right at home.

When you make milkshakes at home, you can control exactly what goes into them. You can make the consistency more or less thick to your liking, add more Oreos without an upcharge, and garnish the top of it however you’d like. Plus, why would you ever want to pay anything over $5 for a milkshake that’s so delightfully simple?!

A full glass of Oreo milkshake is topped with a cherry, cookies, and whipped cream.

What You’ll Need:

  • Ice Cream – Vanilla ice cream is the sweet and basic base that lets the Oreos shine.
  • Milk – I use whole milk for the most creamy consistency.
  • Oreos – If you want a fun pop of color, check out what they have on the shelves! Sometimes, there will be seasonal Oreos (think Christmas and Halloween) that have the signature Oreo flavor, but with a special color cream in the middle.
  • Vanilla Extract – For the best flavor, use pure vanilla extract, not imitation.
The top of a milkshake is topped with a straw, a cherry, a halved Oreo cookie, and whipped cream.

Common Questions

Can I make it vegan? Yep! Just swap out the ice cream and milk for plant based replacements. Oreos are already vegan, so no replacement needed there!

Can I make it boozy? The answer to this question is always YES! You can add a shot or two of Bailey’s and/or Godiva chocolate liqueur to make this milkshake for adults only.

#2: It’s stuff like this that makes me seriously thankful I have a husband that “does cars”. Everybody has someone they know in some industry that gets them deals, but I’m pretty happy with him being in that one. Huge cost saver!
#7: Hate the new interface. I think I just hate change period. I’ve never been a fan of the “mapping” stuff though. I don’t do foursquare and I don’t like some phone (and therefore the entire internet) knowing where I am at any given time. Plus, I’m always home so my picture mapping would be super lame.
#8,9,10: All I can now think of is the milkshake song…grrr. This looks worth it at least ;)

A la Rachel, a multipoint reply:

    1) I am sadly (except not so much) addicted to TSwift. Like she’s my fave Pandora station. And yeaaaah, I know I sometimes feel a little bit 15 years old singing to “Mean.” But you know what? I want to wear a pretty dress and have a cute boy woo me in a rowboat. Sue me.

    2) Um, your office is way too cool. I have no windows. Just blank walls. Although I do have a door, which is more than most of my friends in cubicles can say.

    3) I am of the firm belief that it’s “creme” when you’re not aaaactually using milk (think “fruit drink” instead of “fruit juice”), and “cream” when your ingredients are less fake. Or maybe I’m just COMPLETELY overthinking this.

Thank God it’s Friday–can you tell I’m ready to give my brain a break? Milkshakes for all!
