If it’s not broke, don’t break it, right? Cookies and cream milkshakes have been around since 1979 when students and a dairy plant manager at South Dakota State University decided to blend some Oreos with ice cream. The rest, as they say, is history! While there are plenty of way you can dress up this classic milkshake, I like it just the way it should be.

And the way it should be is creamy, decadent, and loaded with Oreos! You only need vanilla ice cream, milk, Oreos, and a splash of vanilla extract to make this tried and true American classic. While you can go to any diner, drive-thru, or shake spot to grab a Cookies and Cream Milkshake, I like making them right at home.

When you make milkshakes at home, you can control exactly what goes into them. You can make the consistency more or less thick to your liking, add more Oreos without an upcharge, and garnish the top of it however you’d like. Plus, why would you ever want to pay anything over $5 for a milkshake that’s so delightfully simple?!

A full glass of Oreo milkshake is topped with a cherry, cookies, and whipped cream.

What You’ll Need:

  • Ice Cream – Vanilla ice cream is the sweet and basic base that lets the Oreos shine.
  • Milk – I use whole milk for the most creamy consistency.
  • Oreos – If you want a fun pop of color, check out what they have on the shelves! Sometimes, there will be seasonal Oreos (think Christmas and Halloween) that have the signature Oreo flavor, but with a special color cream in the middle.
  • Vanilla Extract – For the best flavor, use pure vanilla extract, not imitation.
The top of a milkshake is topped with a straw, a cherry, a halved Oreo cookie, and whipped cream.

Common Questions

Can I make it vegan? Yep! Just swap out the ice cream and milk for plant based replacements. Oreos are already vegan, so no replacement needed there!

Can I make it boozy? The answer to this question is always YES! You can add a shot or two of Bailey’s and/or Godiva chocolate liqueur to make this milkshake for adults only.

  1. I heart list posts like this! I need to do them more often! I just added that Taylor Swift song to my Spotify playlist – believe it or not I haven’t heard up. My husband loves T Swift like I love list posts so I better let him know she has a new song too. :P

I haven’t had a milkshake in fooooorever. I need to get on that.

  2. You are killing me with all this cookies & creme goodness this week. I was *this* close to purchasing a pack of Oreos at the store yesterday!

And don’t even get me started on Taylor Swift. Why does her music have to be so darn catchy! I feel like a 15 year old for loving it so much!

Why the heck have I not been following you on Instagram?!!?? I shall have remedy this.

  3. How cool would it be to pay the mechanics with these milk shakes, I’m all for the barter system in life…try it, they might say yeah (if they have any brains!!)

  4. 2. You could technically find the OEM part from a secondhand dealer and it would still be a geniune. And then bring said parts to a private mechanic who can fix your car at a lower price.

    3. I never heard that Taylor Swift song until you mentioned it. It sure is catchy, haha! Can’t wait to karaoke it!

    4. Yay for office windows!

  6. Cookies and creme week is awesome! This milkshake looks divine! Judging by the fact it’s already pushing 100 degrees in California at 10am, I think I deserve one now, too :) also, congrats on your new office! Two windows sounds awesome but personally, I could NEVER get work done because I actually WOULD spend all my time people watching. Gah, I am a voyeur. Anyway, have a good weekend Julie!

I love that Pinterest is on iPad now. I just have to figure out how to lock the app since my kids play with it so they don’t go pinning all kinds of crazy stuff. :)
