There’s really nothing quite like a classic monte cristo sandwich, but these sliders give the real deal a run for its money! If you love a good monte cristo, you’ll love how you can have all of the best elements of it in this easy slider recipe. Layers of both turkey and ham are baked with gooey Swiss cheese between buttered Hawaiian buns, making each bite more satisfying than the last.

While this recipe is a brunch favorite of mine, it’s honestly pretty fabulous to whip up any time of day. Serve it as an appetizer, as lunch, or bring it with you to your next potluck. One of the best things about making sliders of any kind is that they’re meant to feed a crowd, so these little crowd-pleasers really make a statement anywhere they go!

What is a Monte Cristo?

The origin of the monte cristo isn’t clear but it is said to have been inspired by the French’s croque monsieur, which is a classic French grilled or baked sandwich made with ham, cheese, and béchamel sauce. On the other hand, a monte cristo sandwich is usually assembled by placing layers of ham and cheese (often Swiss or Gruyère) between two slices of bread. Sometimes, turkey or chicken is also added to the sandwich. The entire sandwich is then dipped in beaten eggs mixed with milk or cream and fried in butter or oil until the bread becomes crispy and the cheese melts.

Why You’ll Love This

  • So EASY. Yes! Just assemble the sliders, brush with the best buttery mixture, and bake to cheesy perfection in just under 30 minutes. Oh, and don’t forget to dust with powdered sugar just before serving, of course! You’ll love just how quick and easy this slider recipe is.
  • Perfect for brunch. To me, a monte cristo slider/sandwich just screams brunch. However, do keep in mind that you can really serve these easy sliders any time of day! I just personally prefer to enjoy them with my favorite copycat Starbucks latte.

Recipe Tips, Substitutions, and Variations

Here are just a few ways you can make this easy sliders recipe the very best it can be!

  • Grind up the black pepper. When it comes to topping the sliders, you’ll want to do so with three simple ingredients – melted butter, an egg, and black pepper. Make the pepper really pop by using freshly ground black pepper for the best flavor.
  • Tent the buns if needed. If the buns start turning too brown, cover them loosely with tented tin foil. We don’t want it to stick to the buns, so make sure the foil isn’t touching anything. This will help cook the sliders all the way through and toast the buns without burning them.
  • Don’t forget the jam! Raspberry and strawberry jam are both the most classic accompaniments to serve with monte cristo sliders. However, you can always feel free to get a little fancier with some blackberry lemon jam or blueberry lavender jam.

Storage and Reheating Instructions

Once they’re fully cooled to room temperature, you can store your sliders in an airtight container in the fridge for about 2-3 days. While they reheat just fine in the microwave, they’re even better when reheated back in the oven! Bake the leftovers at 350°F for about 10 minutes or until warmed all the way through.
